Have A Grape Night Out (Or In) At Unwined In Tooting

| by Editor | Posted in News
Laura and Kiki of Unwined in Tooting

Unwined in Tooting is a unique wine shop, bar and kitchen (how many of those have you seen in SW17?) nestled in Tooting Market. We had a word with Kiki and Laura, the brains behind the operation.

So what is Unwined in Tooting?
Unwined is 3-fold – wine shop, bar & kitchen. As much as we would love people to come to buy wine to enjoy at home, we love having people stay as well. During the week we're more of a shop, but as we head towards the weekend we become more of a bar and our resident chefs fire up the kitchen from Thursdays to Sundays.

As with our pop-ups, Unwined is based on the idea of making wine fun and unpretentious. We champion quirky wine, with unusual grape varieties from lesser know regions, and the stories of those behind the label. We wanted to have a very homely, rustic feel to the space and an ever-changing, evolving nature, so we change our menu every 4 weeks and ask pop-up chefs to take over the kitchen.

What’s your background and how did Unwined come about?
A Grape Night In started in 2012 as a pop-up wine company, hosting wine events from people's front rooms to residencies on roof terraces. We've grown from strength to strength over the years and finally came to a point where we had to find a permanent space to operate from, which is how Unwined came to be when we opened in July this year.

Why did you settle in Tooting, and why the market?
We live locally and Tooting has such an eclectic and diverse mix of businesses, so we thought a wine shop/bar would fit nicely into this mix. We always said that if we had a permanent space we wanted it to be somewhere a bit off the beaten track, a bit unexpected and Tooting Market certainly has that appeal! We haven't looked back as not only have the other traders been super welcoming but the support from the local community has been overwhelming – we love Tooting

Why change the food every month?
We wanted to create a wine bar with a difference. Cheese and charcuterie has long been the classic pairing to wine, but we think wine can offer so much more, so we put it to the test by offering a completely different cuisine type each month, from Italian to Korean to Sri Lankan. It's important to note that we also pick our wines first and the chefs pair their dishes to them, turning traditions completely on their head!

Tell us about The Unwined Sessions.
We’re glad you asked! The Unwined Sessions are run in a supperclub style, so guests come and pull up a chair as we share wine, food and stories through our monthly-changing quirky themes. The idea is that if you can only make it to Unwined once a month, then this supperclub gives you the ultimate experience of this month's resident chef's menu and themed wines. We've recently taken the Unwined Sessions to the next level, by showcasing the full menu from the current resident chef, and of course paired to our wines.

Not only that, but we host #WineWednesdays every, erm, Wednesday! These are a series of tasting events where, each month, we have a rolling schedule of events covering a bit about a current topic in wine ('Wine Chat'), grapes ('Grapes Deconstructed'), showcase a winery ('Wine Heroes'), and regions ('Passport of Wine'). We have sessions at 2pm (for mums & dads!) and one at 7:15pm (for after work).

What else do you offer?
We also offer outside catering – A Grape Night In was Laura's idea to offer wine lovers an opportunity to have a wine tasting in their own homes, and this is something we have embraced since we started. We can host events in all kinds of spaces, occasions, and number of people – and all with a focus on wine of course!

With the lead up to Christmas, we have some great packages on offer if you're looking to organise a festive event with your family and friends. We also have all your Christmas wine taken care of – join us on December 2nd for a Christmas tasting at Unwined and pre-order your Yuletide tipples!

Of course wine isn't just for Christmas, and we love to host events all year round – for more info, drop us a line
