Samrat – Tooting's oldest Tandoori!

Venture a little further to the edges of Tooting and you’ll find Samrat (it means “king”) Tandoori, Tooting’s longest established Indian restaurant and a firm favourite with many locals.

Samrat is a proper old-school curry house, with fantastic decor. A family-run business since 1980, Amaan (Saju) took the business over from his father, Mr Meah (referred to with great affection by Samrat’s customers, as is Amaan), a few years ago and carries on his family’s tradition in serving beautifully-cooked Tandoori cuisine.

King Prawn Butterfly

We had a King Prawn Butterfly, followed by a Lamb Rezala Balti, a wonderful mix of  sweetness and spice, with some excellent Mushroom Rice and a particularly pillowy Peshwari Naan. All this, accompanied with an ice-cold Kingfisher beer, settled us in nicely to food heaven. The friendly, informative staff rounded things out nicely – we even got a hot towel at the end!

If visiting for the first time, Amaan will happily take you through their menu and make recommendations. Samrat’s signature dishes include Naga Aroma (chicken or lamb with Bengali Naga chilli spice) – a must for hot curry lovers, Ghost Grilled Bhuna (grilled pieces of lamb in a thick Bengali Masala) and their own twist on a traditional lamb shank.

Regulars flowed in to the restaurant on the Monday evening we visited, and were all warmly greeted by Amaan, Saif and Taj, who knew them all by name (and even what their usual dish was). We had a brief chat with Steve and Dawn, customers who have been visiting Samrat for 15 years and unsurprisingly love it – “it’s almost like a second home” said Steve.

“We’re so happy to have customers come back again and again,“ says Amman, echoing Steve’s comment. “We love Tooting, its diversity and history, and we’re immensely proud to be a part of that and to have served the community for so long.”
