Tooting & Mitcham United - September Review - By Roger Butcher

Tooting & Mitcham United - September Review - By Roger Butcher

Its been another good month for Tooting as they stretched their unbeaten start to the season to 10 games.

Tooting started the month in 10th place, but took advantage of their early exit from the FA Cup when they played Horsham whilst all of their rivals were in cup action. Billy Dunn scored twice against his old team in a 2-1 victory which propelled the Terrors to the top of the table and the top spot was retained, as Tooting won 3-1 on the 4G astroturf at Whyteleafe and 4-3 on the slightly less flat pitch at South Park. The victory at South Park was particularly impressive as we were 3-1 down at half time but rallied well and sealed the 4-3 win with a 90th minute winner from Billy Dunn after Matte Pierson had saved a penalty.

Matte Pierson who saved two penalties.

A win and a draw at home to Ramsgate and Guernsey respectively meant we travelled to bogey side Faversham Town still leading the pack, but facing our toughest task year yet. Our record there was, played 4 – lost 4, but this side had other ideas. Another penalty save from Matte Pierson when the score was 0-0 and this was the impetus for us to push on and we eventually won 3-0 with goals from Jordan Wilson, Billy Dunn and Mike Dixon. This was a tremendous result which gave us a record 10 games without defeat from the start of the season. Even in our previous promotion winning seasons we have tended to slip up once or twice early on.

The key to our good start is the goal scoring form of striker Billy Dunn. He has had a bit of a chequered career so far, but our management team seem to be getting the best of him and he has managed 7 goals in 7 games in September.

This success has been all the more remarkable as we have lost left back, Tenny Taiwo to a long term knee injury following the game against Dorking Wanderers last month. We’ve had to make do without a recognised left back for the last 8 or 9 games.

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end and we succumbed to a surprise 2-1 defeat at Molesey last night (Tuesday) despite having the lion’s share of possession and chances. This meant that we have slipped to second place, but we have the chance to get back on the horse on Saturday at home to Hythe. So Bring it on!

Come along to our home games – the 280 bus stops right outside our ground.
