Introducing Lyndsay Wolfe - Tooting-Based Financial Adviser
|
Introducing our latest Community Partner, Tooting-based financial adviser, Lyndsay Wolfe. Lyndsay will be sharing useful financial advice and tips with local residents and businesses here over the coming months. We asked Lyndsay to introduce herself, to find out more about her role and what she loves about Tooting... |
TDP: So tell us a bit about yourself and your role as a financial adviser?
Lyndsay: I may not be a born and bred Tooting girl, but I absolutely feel like this is now my home. I moved to London almost 12 years ago to work for one of the big banks and instantly fell in love with London life. Over the years, and especially as a consequence of the credit crunch, banking became a tough industry to work in. I really wanted to get back to the basics of providing financial advice, so I decided to set up my own company helping individuals and small businesses. I believe that building relationships is an integral part of any business and giving people the confidence to trust financial services again after the credit crunch is really important — it plays a key part in all our lives and futures. My business is genuinely client focused, and helps take the frustration out of financial planning.
In my spare time I enjoy keeping fit (you may see me struggling to run round Tooting Bec Common), and travelling. Of course, I also love investigating all the different eateries in Tooting and have recently joined the newly-formed Tooting WI!
TDP: Tell us about your business and how you help people with their finances?
Lyndsay: My business aims to help people through the financial quagmire and remove the worries and concerns of looking after your finances. Whether that be trying to understand your pension, looking at investment planning or helping business owners when they’re starting up and aren’t sure where to turn for help. I work alongside other professionals such as accountants and lawyers and am backed by a wealth of experts with many years of industry experience. This gives my clients the confidence that they are in safe hands.
TDP: How did you get into finance and how did you start your business?
Lyndsay: Like a lot of people I fell into Finance. I graduated from university, where I studied politics, and didn’t really have much of an idea about the type of career I wanted to get into. In order to avoid having to make that decision, I put off the decision by going travelling with a friend and a year later found myself back in the UK, still with no clear job ideas but with a hefty credit card bill from my adventures. The only plan I had was to get a short-term job, get myself into a more financially sound place, and then return to study. However, I got a job in a bank and, 15 years later, I’m running my own company as a Financial Adviser
My business is in Tooting and I work from home 3 days a week, with the other two spent in my office in London. I love the flexibility this gives me and helps break up the week so that I can meet up with people locally, but also still feel as if I’m involved in an office environment with the fun and support that provides – even if that does mean having to avoid all the cakes and treats in the office!
TDP: Who are your current clients and are they from Tooting?
Lyndsay: I’m currently working with a number of local clients to help them with their individual and business needs. Most of my clients are young professionals, some with children, who are getting to the stage in their lives where they feel they need some specific guidance on their finances. I’ve also been involved more socially with the recent Tootopia and the local WI.
TDP: Who inspires you?
Lyndsay: Wow, that’s a tough question! People like Sadiq Khan are always going to be high on my inspirational list; he’s done so much for this community and as Mayor has made some remarkable changes which will go on to help Londoners for many years to come.
I meet so many people in my role that are inspirational. Many have started their own businesses because they have a passion for a career or hobby and want to tell everyone they meet about it. I find this truly inspiring as you can see how much it means to them and the effort and passion they put in shines through. It reminds me of a quote that I heard at a recent meeting where we discussing the merits of Johnny Wilkinson’s kicking ability (World Cup winning England Rugby player); “Don’t practice until you get it right. Practice until you can’t get it wrong”.
We come across so many hurdles in life, in fact, Kate Winslet recently said, after winning a BAFTA Award and admitting that she had been told as a young girl that she would not succeed, "I didn't listen and I kept on going and I overcame all of my fears, and I got over a lot of insecurity and just keep doing it, and keep believing in yourself."
TDP: What are you hoping to bring to the people of Tooting?
Lyndsay: The reason I’m still in Financial Services after such a long time, is that I really enjoy being able to help people. Long gone are the days where you knew your local bank manager by name and that friendly face of the cashier in the local branch and I want to bring back that client-focused business ethos. Finances can be scary for many of us and people worry that they don’t understand their mortgage or their pension. Initially we’d sit down together, work out what the most important issues are for you and once these have been identified and prioritised, I’ll recommend a way forward. If I can make life a bit easier by taking that worry away, then I’ll feel like I’ve succeeded. The one thing I always say to my clients is that I can guarantee that I would not know how to do your job, and so don’t worry about trying to be your own financial adviser!
TDP: What do you like the most about Tooting?
Lyndsay: Where do I begin?! I’ve lived in Tooting for almost 12 years and have seen so many significant changes to the area in that time. I feel privileged to be part of the community, and so excited that I’ve had the opportunity to set up my own business here, like so many others. I’m really looking forward to working with more local businesses and Tooting residents in the future.
TDP: Where are your favourite places to hang out in Tooting?
Lyndsay: There are so many new and exciting places opening up all the time, I'm therefore an avid Twitter follower of all things #tooting to make sure I don't miss out. You'll often find me spending a weekend evening in Tooting or Broadway Markets, enjoying a drink in Craft Tooting or Graveney Gin, and of course finishing off with a fantastic bite to eat at the Little Taperia or grabbing a Sunday brunch at Tota.
