Tooting mum launches app to support young people

| by Tooting Newsie | Posted in News, Education, Parenting, Technology

Tooting mum Charlotte Penniceard has recently launched Be-Zing, a web application to be used by young people and their supporters (eg parents, guardians and teachers) to provide tools to build confidence, self belief and resilience, as well as create an ongoing CV of their life, giving them direction and purpose.

This is achieved through setting SMART goals, planning future dreams, recording unique achievements, listing resources to inspire, and having a personal affirmation to remind them to believe in themselves.

Charlotte says, “the most important thing in young people’s lives is to feel self-worth. When my daughter started secondary school, she struggled to make friends and fit in, and lost her confidence.  Myself and my husband Andy worked with her to set new manageable goals, write a personal affirmation, and slowly build a list of achievements to be proud of, as well as change her negative thought patterns.

“This was the driving force to build an application to support both the young person and the parent simultaneously, but was also always accessible and updateable. The ideal age for the child to start using it is 7 or 8 years, so that by the time they leave primary school they feel confident and ready for their next chapter.

“As a child, I suffered extreme insecurities and shyness starting school with selective mutism and a fear of showing emotion. My mother was clinically depressed and when I was 12, my brother contracted a terrible brain virus and died two years later. This led to feelings of complete worthlessness, lack of drive, eating disorders and much more.  Having to overcome these challenges as a young person has helped me to understand and empathise with the needs of children and their insecurities, so this has really driven me to help them.”
