Meet Josie of local charity Evolve Housing + Support

Josie Gaunt

Tooting resident Josie Gaunt of local charity Evolve Housing Support tells us why she quit the hospitality industry to join the team at one of London’s leading homelessness charities.

As a born and bred Tooting girl I am so thrilled to be writing my very first blog post for Tooting Daily PRSS. I recently ended a career in hospitality (which included a stint at Tooting’s very own Graveney Gin) to join the amazing team at Evolve Housing Support based down the road in South Wimbledon. Evolve provides housing and support to over 2,000 people each year across seven South London boroughs including Wandsworth

Working in hospitality gave me an opportunity to meet so many new people, work abroad and learn a lot about food. The experience I gained was invaluable and I steadily worked my way up in the industry. As I got older and more aware of the social and economic climate I felt more conscious of the issues my community, and the surrounding communities, were facing. I started seeing more and more homeless people on the streets and was seeing constant news coverage about further government cuts directly affecting these vulnerable people. After some soul searching I decided to hand in my notice as an Events and Marketing Manager and take the leap into the charity sector – within weeks I’d been offered a job at Evolve and I couldn’t be happier I made the change!

I started with Evolve just two months ago and am already so impressed by the inspiring work they are doing across London. As well as providing accommodation for 2,000 people each year they also offer life-changing programmes to give service users 360 degree support. 78% of people that come to Evolve move on to positive independence. Programmes include:Work Learning, Health Wellbeing, Horizons Mentoring, Resettlement, Gang Prevention and Intervention, and Relationship Violence Support, all of which are charitably funded.

My role as Corporate Partnerships Officer is to form corporate partnerships with local and national businesses to create and nurture relationships that are both beneficial to the business and help fund our vital programmes.

I have been a long-standing follower of Tooting Daily PRSS and am excited to now be sharing news from Evolve Housing Support with the Tooting community that is so close to my heart.
