Work and Play Scrapstore (WaPS) – the Tooting-based re-use charity which promotes artful re-use of of donated surplus/waste materials – has enjoyed a bumper year of operation!

The charity’s Annual Report & Accounts, released on November 26th, for the financial year ended March 31st 2019, shows that WaPS improved its performance on many measures:

  • They connected with around 30,400 people from all sectors of the community who benefitted from their materials (up from 28,500 last year), either through group or school membership or through their outreach and volunteering activities.
  • They have seen a significant YoY growth in the number of discrete memberships, up from 430 last year to 663 members this year. The number of community groups and individuals have almost doubled while the number of art students has more than doubled.
  • They diverted an estimated 52.6 tonnes of waste away from landfill or incineration (up from 37.282 tonnes last year).
  • The estimated value of materials taken from the Scrapstore this year was £126,310 which means that their members collect materials to the value of four times their membership fee.
  • Some 2,582 separate visits were made to the store last year, which is a huge increase in the 2,008 visits made the previous year.
  • They recorded a record 650 days of volunteering, up from 530 working days last year.
  • They ran 40 separate re-use, upcycling or arts workshops with 17 community groups and charities throughout the year.
  • They ran ten educational tours of the Scrapstore for young people (aged 16-25) from Kingston College, JACE (job seekers), University of the Arts London and Lambeth College.

“Our operational successes over the past year, with more tonnage of scrap and waste collected, more materials sorted and presented, more subscriber visits resulting in huge added value leaving the Scrapstore to take on new life as artistic and educational objects, is truly amazing,” said Patrick Moon, Chair of WaPS.
