Re-building the Towers of Summerstown

Re-building the Towers of Summerstown

Work and Play Scrapstore (WaPS) – the Tooting-based re-use charity which promotes artful re-use of of donated surplus/waste materials – is rebuilding the second of the two Towers of Summerstown, brick by brick, with the help of its members.

The fun begins on Tuesday January 28th, 2pm-5pm, in the foyer of the Scrapstore, when members will decorate a (foam) brick using repurposed materials to create a 15-block-high tower – replicating the 15-storey real thing!

Masterminding the project is local artist Weavie Stevie who has already done so much to add colour to the Hazelhurst Estate, where Scrapstore is located between the two towers.

“The actual towers are the two tower blocks built on the area hit by a V2 rocket during the war,” explains Stevie. ”Each brick represents a person and each member will be asked to think of a word that describes them and to decorate a brick with that word using materials that would be otherwise be thrown away. Come and be a brick!”

The first Towers of Summerstown was completed by Scrapstore members and local children last summer, including during Hazelfest, Scrapstore’s annual half-day mini festival. It can be seen in the Scrapstore foyer, awaiting its neighbouring tower to be built next week, and in the photo above.
