Campaign to save the Tooting Constitutional Club
Alaina Macdonald, Labour councillor for Graveney, led a meeting at the Graveney and Meadow last night to discuss the future of the Tooting Constitutional Club on Tooting High Street.
At present, (and as previously reported here), the building is currently under threat of demolition to make way for a new seven-storey apartment complex. However, this is still at the pre-planning stage.
A Graveney resident stated that they did not want “ugly, disproportionate blocks of flats” on the high street, and there was a unanimous decision at the meeting to preserve the existing building. Residents also want the bowling green to be saved as a green space for public use.
An online petition has been created to save the building. An application will be submitted for the building to become an Asset of Community Value and the Tooting History Group are liaising with English Heritage to see if the building is eligible for listed status. A request has also been sent to Wandsworth Council asking that the building be listed locally.
