The future of the Tooting Constitutional Club?
A meeting to discuss the future of the Tooting Constitutional Club is to take place at the Graveney and Meadow on Monday 17th November.
A developer has bought the club, and the future of the building and the bowling green is in doubt. It currently looks as if the building will be demolished to make way for new flats. The aim of Monday’s meeting is to bring together community opposition into a unified campaign against these plans.
Residents are invited to meet Alaina Macdonald and other Labour councillors on Monday to further discuss the plans. “We’re very aware that local residents wish to protect the integrity of the building,” says councillor Macdonald, “and to keep the green space as there’s very little in the surrounding area. Perhaps the space could be converted into a play area for local children. We’d also like to preserve the character of the area as many residents think that the proposed flats do not fit with the current buildings on Tooting High Street. Residents really care about this building and wish to see the space retained for the community.”
The Tooting History Group have agreed to present a brief history of the site and update attendees on their application for listed status at Monday’s meeting which begins at 7.00pm. If residents cannot attend the meeting but would like to inform the campaign, then they are invited to email Councillor Alaina Macdonald with their thoughts.
