Furzedown Low Carbon Zone (FLCZ) is a community group working to make Tooting a more sustainable place to live. They have run draft busting workshops, promoted solar PV installations on houses and run an energy efficiency project in a local school.
FLCZ has been running since 2011, forming from Transition Town Tooting and is now a member of Community Energy England, the voice of the community energy movement. FLCZ meets one evening a month, either in a community space or a member's house. Their membership is growing and all interested newcomers are welcome. FLCZ also tries to hold or participate in a community event every month, from film screenings to public meetings. They are supported by the Greener Jobs Alliance and not-for-profit consultancy Thinking Works.
FLCZ encourage renewable energy in the home and have held free workshops to promote this, working with local and national firms. They have also worked with London Sustainability Exchange, South Thames College and Transition Town Tooting to measure air pollution levels around Tooting and Balham. Their results showed dangerous levels of pollution in these areas, and talks are currently being held with Wandsworth Council about bringing these levels down.
A current aim of FLCZ is to establish an energy co-op that creates a revenue stream for investing in the wellbeing of the local community. The co-op will install solar panels on local buildings – the panels will be paid for by grants where possible and by investment from the community. The solar panels will earn cash from the sale of electricity and special feed-in tariffs that apply to renewable energy production, which provides a modest financial return to investors – the surplus cash is then put into a community pot for local sustainability projects. FLCZ is now talking to several schools and other buildings to find a suitable site for the solar panels.
FLCZ are looking for volunteers and/or people who can pledge support. You can get in touch with them via email or on Twitter.
