Southside bring Arcadia to Balham
Tom Stoppard’s ‘richest and most ravishing comedy’ brings chaos and disorder to Balham.
Balham’s award-winning theatre group, Southside, will perform ‘Arcadia’ by Tom Stoppard from Wednesday 18 February to Saturday 21 February (half-term) at Chestnut Grove School Theatre, Boundaries Road SW12.
The Guardian described ‘Arcadia’ as: ‘A play of ideas that pits the classical against the romantic, science against poetry; the past against the present.’ Set in an English country house, the action time-travels between the early 1800s and the present day. This dazzling comedy covers themes of order and disorder, past and present, certainty and uncertainty.
‘But,’ the Guardian added, ‘it has a racing heart, too, exploring what it is that makes us human and our determination to keep dancing even as the darkness gathers and the universe grows cold.’
‘Arcadia’ won the Laurence Olivier award for best new play when it premiered at the Royal National Theatre in 1993.
Tickets: £10, concessions £7.50, Wednesday and Saturday only.
