Tooting & Mitcham United, November Review - By Roger Butcher
What a month for Tooting & Mitcham!
As we racked up a perfect record of 7 wins from 7 games, scoring 34 goals in the process. Not only did this extend our winning run to 8 consecutive games, it also propelled us back to top spot of the Ryman League South Division.
Its difficult to know where to start, but a lot of supporters have seen us play some excellent football over the last 12 months, but we have often been guilty of spurning chances. Manager Frank Wilson seems to have put that right! In addition, despite our good early season form, we seemed unable to keep a clean sheet. However, in the last 6 games, goalkeeper Matte Pierson has managed to keep the opposition goalless 4 times. In short, the whole group have gelled fantastically well of late and are getting the results that their adventurous play has deserved.
Amongst the highlights, there was the 6-0 away win at Guernsey last Wednesday. Traditionally a tough place to visit for everyone, as we haven’t managed to pick up points from them before. So to demolish them so emphatically must have been particularly satisfying for the players and management.
Once again, Billy Dunn has been leading from the front with 16 goals in the last 9 games including 3 hat tricks. One of those trebles came in our 8-2 thrashing of Molesey, the first time we had scored 8 in a league match since 2004. Not that its been a one man effort – the whole team has been contributing with outstanding performances, and creating lots of opportunities. And fortunately for us, Billy Dunn is in a rich vein of form in front of goal and is converting his chances.
Another striker who has been on form is Mike Dixon who started the season on the bench but has grabbed his opportunity in the 1st XI with both hands with 9 goals in November, including a hat trick in the win at Guernsey.
So we can safely say that we are now in the middle of a serious challenge for promotion, and therefore every game will now take on extra importance. We have a busy month ahead including games against 3 of our closest challengers, so hopefully we can continue our great run into these games and be able to maintain this good run? There’s one way to find out – come down and watch!
Come along – the 280 stops right outside!
