People of Tooting get crafty for the Twirl!
Tuesday night was Transition Town Tooting’s (TTT) latest crafty get together: Meet & Make for the Tooting Twirl.
The Tooting Twirl will be a community extravaganza, set to transform the bus turning circle into a pop-up village green for an afternoon in July.
With just under three weeks to go, the small organising team are gearing up to bring their ideas from paper to reality, and so hosted this Meet & Make to engage the communities of Tooting in the creative process.
The workshop began with an introduction to the project so far, then broke out into a making session. Participants were provided with a selection of materials from the Work and Play Scrapstore and asked to create a piece of fancy dress fitting with the ‘green’ or ‘twirly’ themes of the project.
This workshop is part of a series hosted by local artist and Co-Chair of Transition Town Tooting Jeni Walker, who said, “Tooting has creativity and celebration in its soul. Meet & Makes are about creating spaces and opportunity for the communities of Tooting to get together and tap into that creativity.
Visitors to the Tooting Twirl are invited to immerse themselves in the experience by dressing up on the day as something ‘twirly’ (like a moustache or a pinwheel) and/or ‘green’, which could include grass, leaves, insects and flowers.
The Tooting Twirl takes place on Sunday 16th July, noon to 4pm in Tooting’s Bus Turning Circle (between Primark and Greggs) at the junction of Mitcham Road and Longmead Road (see below). TTT are running are currently fundsurfing to raise money for the event – you can donate at https://www.fundsurfer.com/project/transforming-tooting-bus-circle-into-a-pop-up-village-green.
