New air monitoring project in Tooting

New air monitoring project in Tooting

Furzedown Low Carbon Zone (FLCZ) has started a new air monitoring project in Tooting.

They last one, carried out in 2014, showed dangerous levels of pollution. Those results were used to lobby Wandsworth Council and helped to get an air monitoring station installed outside TK Maxx in 2015. The town centre also became an air quality action area as a result.

The first results for June 2017 are now back from the lab and details can be found here. FLCZ focused on the areas around 3 of the schools identified as being at risk as well as South Thames College. St Anselms and St Boniface schools appear to be just under the safe level for Nitrogen Dioxide, while Al Risalah and particularly South Thames College are over the limit.

FLCZ stresses that these are early results based on one measurement and they hope to give a more comprehensive report in August, when 3 months of initial testing has been completed.

“A huge amount needs to be done to make Tooting High Street a safe air zone, particularly for those who live or work there, says Graham Petersen of FLCZ.

FLCZ requires help to take this forward and escalate the campaign, and will be running a training event at City Hall on Wednesday, July 26th from 6.30-8.30pm (see here for details). This is in conjunction with London Sustainability Exchange and is open to people in SW London communities who want to find out more and get involved in air quality work.
