Tooting & Mitcham United FC 2017/18 Preview!

Tooting & Mitcham United FC 2017/18 Preview!

Manager Frank Wilson has largely kept faith with last year’s successful squad of players.

Our resident Tooting & Mitcham United reporter, Roger Ramone, looks ahead to an exciting campaign as the team look to build on last season’s success.......

Well, after the glorious record breaking championship winning season, we are embarking on our first Isthmian Premier Division campaign for 6 years.  This season, the Isthmian League sponsor has changed to Bostik after 20 years of great support from Ryman. It’s going to take a bit of getting used to!

Pre-season training is well underway, and by and large, manager Frank Wilson has kept faith with last year’s successful squad of players, with most of them signing up for another season, including last season’s skipper, Sol Patterson-Bohner.  There will probably still be a few comings and goings before the league season begins on 12th August, but I think we’ll be seeing a very familiar looking team take to the field on opening day.

We have had a couple of early pre-season games so far, resulting in a couple of defeats, but obviously at this stage, it is still about getting fitness and maybe experimenting with players and tactics.  Nevertheless, I’m sure that the management and supporters would still like to see a win or two before the real stuff begins in earnest.  We have two attractive home friendlies coming up.  On Saturday, we host local rivals Carshalton Athletic at 3pm, then on Tuesday evening our visitors will be Crystal Palace with a 7:30 kick off.  Whilst it probably won’t be the Crystal Palace 1st team, there’s always a chance that a future Premiership star or England international might be on show. If you haven’t been to the ground before, why not come along and enjoy a nice, balmy summer evening (hopefully) of football – the admission for each of these games is just £5.

Captain of last season's champions, Sol Patterson-Bohner.

We then have an away friendly at East Grinstead on August 5th before the league fixtures start just one week later.  Our first game will be at home to Brightlingsea Regent, who like ourselves were promoted last season – in their case they were Ryman North champions with a similar record to ours, so this could be a very close game. Although the same could probably be said for every game in this division!  This is followed by 2 away games – at Staines Town and Merstham.  Then we have a very tough game at home to Enfield Town who are regular top ten finishers and reached the play offs last season.  As if that wasn’t a reminder how tough this league will be, we travel to arch rivals Dulwich Hamlet on bank holiday Monday.  They have reached the playoffs for the last 3 seasons, but have managed to slip up each time.

So by the end of August, we should have a good idea if we have settled down and got used to the higher standard of football and whether we can produce the same sort of form which served us so well last year.  Possibly, fans like myself would be happy with a mid table finish, but I think that the players and management will be targeting a top 5 finish and a play off position.  That might sound like a big ask, but the team were outstanding last season and definitely exceeded all expectations. So why not again?

Come along – the 280 bus stops right outside the ground!
