Under pressure? Change your boiler!

Ed Barros of Tooting-based Permanex Plumbing on the advantages of changing your boiler. Better pressure? Cheaper bills? Yep, all that and more!

We recently had a client who wanted to replace his 25 year old Potterton Kingfisher 2 floor-standing conventional boiler and two 150 litre standard hot water cylinders (one on the ground floor, one on the top floor).

We discussed the options of replacing the boiler only or converting to a combination boiler system. The client chose the combination system after we carried out various cold-water pressure tests to ensure that the boiler would give good water to two bathrooms.

To test the pressure, we connected a gauge to the water main and checked the pressure when two taps are open giving the dynamic pressure – this tells us the pressure when two bathrooms are being used. We then tested the flow of water in litres per minute to show how much how water the bathrooms will be able to receive with the new combi boiler.

We subsequently quoted for a Vaillant Exclusive 843 Green IQ, Vaillant’s latest model which can deliver 94% efficiency, saving on energy bills as well as being made from 85% recyclable materials. We coupled this with a free upgrade to Vailant’s vSmart internet controller to give greater control over the boiler and raise the energy efficiency rating to A plus, saving approximately £255 a year on energy bills, according to The Energy Saving Trust.

The vSmart is a weather compensating controller with mobile and remote connectivity – you can turn your heating on and off via a smartphone, tablet or PC/laptop. The built-in weather compensation allows the vSmart to monitor the outside temperature and adjust the boiler output accordingly – should the outside temperature drop it will tell the boiler to produce more heat or if the temperature rises it will tell the boiler to produce less heat, therefore always maintaining the correct temperature inside and only using the required amount of energy, leading to the most efficient running operation possible.

The original Potterton boiler is unrated on the Sedbuk scale and has a 65% efficiency rating according to the Products Characteristics Database. Once the boiler was fitted the client was very happy with his new combi boiler. The house now heats up much quicker than it used to and the hot water, ‘comes out like a fire hose, it’s even better pressure than we had with shower pumps’ (our client’s words!).
