Tooting's Baby-Friendly Cafés!

Tooting's Baby-Friendly Cafés!

Knowing which Tooting cafés are roomy enough to swing a pram around in when you're a parent is crucial information.

We all know that feeling of anxiety that starts to bubble when you're halfway home and your little bundle of joy (aka grizzly gremlin) launches into a rendition of their favourite baby opera (aka screaming). They want food. They want it now.

Gone are the days of wandering into just any local joint. You now have a particular set of needs. Space, to manoeuvre your buggy around in. A baby friendly attitude so that noise, feeding and the odd crumb (or half sandwich) on the floor isn't frowned upon. Clean nappy changing facilities that are accessible to males and females is ideal. And if the coffee is great, well that's an added bonus.

We hit the streets of Tooting to find out which local cafés fit the bill – here are some of our top picks.

Tartine at Tooting Bec provides space, good baby changing facilities and most importantly an outstanding cake selection. Swing your stroller in here with confidence. Knowing that your little person, as well as yourself, will be well catered for in a relaxed, family friendly environment. Unfortunately, the baby changing facilities are only in the ladies loo.

If you're a coffee aficionado, Brickwood in Tooting Market is for you. Getting a seat with space for a buggy during peak brunch times on the weekend can be a little tricky. But for mid-week pit stops you will be fine. There are baby changing facilities, that are both male and female friendly, located behind the market butcher in the wheelchair accessible toilet. My top treat tip is to munch away on the toasted banana bread complete with espresso butter.

If a healthy juice is more your tipple of choice then Get Juiced fits the bill. Also found at Tooting Market, this is a great place to quench your thirst. Get Juiced is located in the central market area where there is plenty of space for prams and buggies. After an injection of vibrant fruits blended with refreshing coconut water, you will be able to take on the rest of your day with gusto.

Midway between Tooting Bec and Balham lies Bertie and Boo. A café designed with children in mind, but with an adult perk of beer! Peroni and Brewdog Nanny State (alcohol free) can be found chilling in the fridge, along with a range of soft drinks and healthy snacks. There is a soft-play zone to keep your little one, and perhaps yourself entertained. Male and female friendly baby change areas are at the rear of the café and there is a buggy butler zone at the front.

The Sound Lounge is a vegan-friendly as well as baby-friendly joint. Found on Upper Tooting Road between Tooting Bec and Broadway, this funky venue provides a great family space during the day. The baby change facilities are both male and female friendly and if you happen to be passing on a Tuesday morning, then pop in for their ‘Shake ‘n’ Sing ’ hour.

The Imperial Durbar, although perhaps better known for its decadent gin and tonics, successfully transforms into a relaxed, classy café by day. There’s a garden out the back as well as a few secluded, and creatively decorated, indoor spaces – handy if you prefer a little privacy whilst breastfeeding. The baby change is well organised and accessible to males and females. You'll find a range of pastries if you're peckish, the coffee is good, and the service excellent. The environment is calm and relaxed so you can catch your breath and maybe even enjoy one of those cheeky gin and tonics.
