Tootopia returns to salute Tooting!

| by Tooting Newsie | Posted in News, Food & Drink, Events, Pets & Animals

Tootopia is in its 4th year and bigger than ever! They’re gearing up for a salute to Tooting through an exciting line-up of local events including food and drinks trails, children’s activities, the popular street food takeover and, new for 2017, ‘Tootopia Fringe’ – a schedule of varied live entertainment at venues throughout the area.

Discover Tooting eateries of new and old representing countries from Pakistan to Poland as The Foodie Trail returns with an “Eat The World” theme: from tagines to tacos, there are treats for food-seekers of all levels to enjoy as Vijaya Krishna, Lahore Karahi, Tequila Taqueria, Mina’s Grill, Plot Kitchen, Pooja’s, The Tapas Room and more open their doors to serve up Tootopia specials.

Take a sip of something new as some of Tooting’s best loved watering holes, bottle bars and coffee corners (including Unwined, Graveney Gin, Little Bar, Craft Tooting, Brick & Liquor and more) pour their own specials just for festival weekend.

Pubs, including The Selkirk, The Antelope, The Long Room, The Trafalgar, The Castle and The Ramble Inn (Tooting’s very own traditional Irish boozer) will swing open their saloon doors for a mix of knees-up style shindigs, mini beer festivals and live entertainment for all the family

Tootopia’s popular markets make a comeback – a street food adventure awaits at the returning Street Food Takeover at Graveney and Meadow where 7 of London’s hottest food brands serve up their signature eats. Tempt your taste buds with treats from Spice Box, Gyoza Guys, Raclette Brothers, Le Bao, Salvador Souvlaki, My Pies, and Barnyard Birds alongside resident Street Food Takeover DJs and live performances.

Shop quirky makes and essentials for home and play courtesy of a pick of talented South London designer-makers at the Tootopia Handmade Fair, or if you’re a bit of a cake connoisseur, enter Tooting’s very own Bake Off at the Big London Bake. Families can pull up a pram to an array of interesting activities for under 10’s, including crafty workshops by Meadow Makers and Love Art, a gigantic kiddie rave by Disco Fest, popup cinema at Tooting Market, pizza dough play at Franco Manca, and popular baby and toddler music sessions by baby fave, Rhythm & Babes.

The 2nd annual Tootopia Pooch Parade, a hit in 2016, returns for more cuteness overload by pups and their grownups! For those with a penchant for history, local guides pitch up at spots across the town to take eager wanderers on a journey through Tooting’s past and through its hidden food spots. From vicars to vice girls, boy soldiers to bodysnatchers, Geoff Simmons invites you on The Greatest Tooting Tour in History. Meet market traders on Dipa Patel’s Tooting Food Tour and explore the only Grade 1 listed civilian building in the U.K as the glamorous former Granada Theatre (now Gala Bingo Tooting) opens its doors for a one-off tour led by the Cinema Theatre Association’s Nigel Pitt – join for stories filled with glitter and golden memories of days gone by and glimpse a rare sighting of the historic Wurlitzer organ, 86 years old, and raised only for Tootopia.

Throughout the weekend, things go Fringe! From brass bands to burlesque, foot-stomping Irish folk quartets and salsa dancers to achingly funny award-winning comedy by Bring Your Own Baby Comedy and the all-female comedy game show ‘Fanny’s Your Aunt’ (fresh from Edinburgh Fringe) hosted by Alice Marshall and Amalia Vitale, Tootopians will be able to enjoy exciting evenings of old-fashioned entertainment by a variety of talented performers inside some of Tooting’s most vibrant pubs, bars and markets!

So whether you’re a foodie seeking a new fix, a local seeking to rediscover Tooting or a visitor new to the magic of SW17, there’ll be something for everyone (and their mates and their mums and dads) to delve into. Head over to the website where listings will be updated daily.
