World Breastfeeding Week is midway through and many news outlets are promoting the benefits of breastfeeding.
Currently the UK has one of the lowest breastfeeding rates in the developed world, with only one percent of babies being exclusively breastfed to six months. The World Health Organisation recommends babies are exclusively breastfed for six months with breast milk remaining part of their diet until the age of two.
Breastfeeding sounds like a simple and affordable way to get your baby off to a good start. However there are many reasons why some mothers can’t, or choose not too breastfeed. Some babies have difficulty latching, breastfeeding can be painful, some mothers lack the confidence to breastfeed in public and feeding can sometimes take a long time leaving mothers mentally and physically tired.
Promoting the benefits of breastfeeding is all good and well, but it can leave mothers that struggle with the process feeling like they're letting their little one down if they are unable to fulfil the WHO targets. Education about feeding options and support for mothers is important and necessary for mother and baby to be happy and healthy.
