Tooting doctor to support Rohingyan Burmese refugees
Shuaib Quraishi is a junior doctor living in Tooting. Here, he tells us about his fundraising drive for Refugee Support Rohingya.
Weʼre raising £5,000 to Refugee Support Rohingya, to assist in the provision of medical care to Rohingyan Burmese refugees in Cox Bazar, Bangladesh.
An estimated 421,000 Rohingya have arrived in Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh since the latest bout of violence broke out on August 25 from Myanmar’s Rakhine State. With humanitarian charity MedGlobal, we have assembled a team of doctors from the UK and US to fly to Bangladesh in 2 weeks and provide free medical care. This includes gynaecology, internal medicine, family medicine and surgeons.
As you can imagine, this involves considerable costs ranging from logistics to provision of important emergency medicines. We want to plan for a field hospital and now have over 120 doctors who are ready to join us throughout the year. Without your help this work would be impossible, so please donate whatever you can as we want to deliver the best medical care possible in what are hostile conditions.
Many of the new arrivals are staying in makeshift settlements or among local Bangladeshi host communities. Existing basic services are now strained, and aid agencies are struggling to cope with the rising needs. New arrivals in all locations are in urgent need of life-saving assistance in food, shelter, health and basic cleanliness. The population is highly vulnerable, consisting mainly of women and children. High numbers of gender based violence and trauma survivors require appropriate specialised services, including clinical management of rape, surgical intervention and mental health and psychosocial support. Systematic screening and referrals are required to ensure people are able to receive the services they need in a timely manner. The sooner education can be provided, the greater the dividends in helping children adjust to their current situation and build hope for the future.
