Volunteer for a Tooting charity!
There are dozens of charities and non-profit groups in Tooting, and if you have a spare hour or two then they’d love you to volunteer or donate (or both)! Here are five of the groups doing amazing work in the community. We’ll be highlighting more charities and community groups in the coming weeks.
The Balham and Tooting Community Association (BATCA) was established in February 2006 by a group of local people who wanted to find new ways to bring the community together in the wake of the London bombings in July 2005. BATCA is committed to creating a harmonious, thriving community where there is trust and friendship between people of all faiths, cultures, ages and backgrounds. Their Community Awards scheme and involvement in the annual summer Fun Day aim to bring all members of the community together and to celebrate Tooting’s wonderful diversity.

The Furzedown Project is an activity centre for older people located in (you guessed it) Furzedown. They aim to prevent social isolation among older people and help to improve the health, well-being and independence through a lively programme of social, educational, recreational and health-promoting activities. Many of these activity sessions are supported by an assisted transport service to enable those with reduced mobility to attend. They also offer a home visiting service, providing friendship and conversation to people who are housebound.

St George’s Hospital is arguably the backbone of Tooting, providing vital health services to the community for many years. If you’ve never spent time there, then you almost definitely know someone who has. St George’s Hospital Charity works tirelessly to raise £1.5m a year to improve the patient experience across all areas of St George's Healthcare NHS Trust. They are currently seeking help for a number of appeals, and welcome any donations or time that volunteers can give.

Transition Town Tooting (TTT) is a community-led initiative that seeks to raise local awareness of the effects of the impact of human activities on the environment. Through events such as the Tooting Foodival, Tooting Twirl and regular meetings and workshops, TTT wants to engage with all of Tooting (in a way that’s practical and fun) to plan and achieve a low energy future to create a more sustainable community.

Wandsworth Oasis was set up in the mid-80s as a response to the global AIDS epidemic. It was at a time when the general public genuinely believed AIDS could be contracted by shaking hands. The original idea was to provide an oasis of support to people living with (and dying of) AIDS, particularly when they had no one else to turn to. They started with just one charity shop in Battersea, but now have seven across Wandsworth, including three in Tooting. They raise money through the sale of donated goods and through a programme of community events to support projects for people living with HIV.
