Tooting residents to choose mural design for car park

Tooting residents to choose mural design for car park

From Thursday 22nd February, Wandsworth Council will be trialling ideas in Tooting to help combat littering across the borough. Working in partnership with award-winning environmental charity Hubbub, Wandsworth residents will have the opportunity to get involved in a number of activities including a community clean-up day, sprucing up Church Lane car park, and gum chalking events.

Residents can also look out for colourful bin and lamp post wraps to encourage people to put their rubbish in the bin, and let people know how to get rid of their household items in the right way.

Research suggests that when somewhere looks nice, people are less likely to dump their rubbish there. That’s why #NeatStreets Tooting is giving Church Lane car park a full makeover to turn it into a place the community can be proud of, and to discourage illegal dumping of rubbish. Street artist Will Impey has been commissioned to paint a colourful mural in the car park, and has drawn up two designs for the local community to choose between. Residents can visit www.bitly.com/carparkmural to cast their votes. Voting closes on 14th February and the mural will be completed in time for the campaign launch on 22nd February.

The council’s environment spokesman Jonathan Cook said, “Tooting is a diverse and exciting place to live, work and visit. The transformation of Church Lane car park is a great example of how #Neat Streets Tooting will celebrate what makes the area unique while tackling the causes of its litter. We are thrilled to have Will Impey involved and look forward to seeing which of his designs the community chooses.”
