Spring is ALMOST sprung in Tooting!

Spring is ALMOST sprung in Tooting!

Okay, so we know that the weather isn’t quite as spring-like as we’d hoped, but hope, erm, springs eternal! So, here’s a quick spring round-up of what’s been happening in Tooting on Instagram...

• Maundy • Maundy is an odd word, one you use without thinking about it, part of a name. It comes from Old French and if you go back further, Latin, the root that gives us our more meaningful, contemporary word mandate. What was the mandate of Maundy Thursday? Love: ‘A new mandate I give you, to love one another.’ It’s one we’ve still not mastered. I listened to an article on a news bulletin this week about women who’ve created an app that created routes walking home that factored in and avoided parks and green spaces. At night, commons and greens, parks and canalsides feel unsafe. Without love the darkness is dangerous, threatening and fearful. With it, these places are magical. Last year I interviewed folk singer Sam Lee part of @nestfolk for @simplethingsmag who every year leads people into the darkness of woodlands to hear the nightingales sing. Closer to home, @WoodlandTrust lead people in bat walks and moth walks in the twilight. Whether you hear the birds sing or see the bats, just being in the woods at night in the darkness without fear would be a real treat. Sometimes I go through the Commons in the dark, hold my breath, listen carefully for the sound of someone following me. No one else is ever there. The only people I ever pass are other women, heads down, walking at speed, holding their breath. If only we loved each other enough to feel free to go where we wanted without fear. We could reclaim the darkness, sink into the noises and rhythms of nature at night. Feel the wonder and strangeness of it all. • I’ve started a monthly newsletter - what to look out for each month, what to forage and what to make with it, a bit more about me, and the occasional pondering about nature and life. Subscribe on the link in my bio if you’d like something more. • • • • • • • • #thiscommonyear #london #tooting #balham #aseasonalyear #thewildnesstonic #stayandwander #gowildlyandslow #inspiredbynature_ #ataleofseasons #embracingtheseasons #intentionalseasons #the_gentle_manifesto #awakethesoul #daysofsmallthings #gloomandglow #slowlived #aslowmoment #alittlebeautyeveryday #stayandwander #quietinthewild #slownaturemoments #thewildnesstonic #alovefornaturesbest #corne
