Exciting new musician to make Tooting debut
Tall Children is actually one man – Ben Hughes – who’ll be making his Tooting debut at The Tooting Tram & Social on May 3rd.
Ben picked up a guitar at the tender age of 5, encouraged by his guitar-playing dad. By 13, he was being taught by legends Tommy Emmanuel and Martin Taylor.
He studied at Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts under the watchful eye of jazz guitarists Mike Walker and Steve Berry.
His first gig, at the age of 13, was in Freshfield Pub in Formby, near Southport, Liverpool. Those first 3 songs in front of a home crowd gave him a taste for performance, but also the confidence to start to write his own songs – penning poetry, lyrics and little essays about his young lens on life.
Since then he's played endless pubs & wedding gigs, even events like Ted X. But en route, he’s played with such people as Tommy Emmanuel, Mick Fleetwood blues band, Dave McCabe and Zutons, Mel C, Nitin Sawhney, Brent Mason, Albert Lee with Hogan’s Heroes, Gaps, Salford Jets, Paulo Nutini. He’s even played ‘Yesterday’ with Paul McCartney.
Inspired by Fleetwood Mac & Michael Jackson as a kid, Ben has since explored music as diverse as DJ Shadow, Jon Hopkins and more recently contemporary pop shape-shifters like The 1975.
He has now built up a bank of pop songs that he thinks are grown-up but playful enough to be worthy of the tag Tall Children.
After recent sessions with Hugh Worskett (Birdy, Michael Kiwanuka), Ben is now in the studio with Rich Turvey (Blossoms, Cabbage), working the 25 demos that will likely become his debut album.
He looks forward to making his Tooting debut at The Tooting Tram & Social on Thursday May 3. Tickets are available here.
