Growing plants & employment options for disabled adults

Growing plants & employment options for disabled adults

Kavita Bowry, Communications and Development Manager at Share Community on how they support disabled adults through gardening and employment, and news of their new nursery.

At Share, we support adults with learning disabilities, autism and mental health needs to learn new things, improve their wellbeing and work towards becoming more independent.

We’ve been gardening in Tooting for over 20 years and during that time we’ve taught people to grow – not just plants, but themselves as well. Crucially, we work to grow our students’ confidence and provide a pathway into employment for them.

Share’s gardening social enterprise, Share Nurseries, is culmination of that work resulting in the launch of a sustainable social business that grows local to encourage people to buy local. Everything sold through Share Nurseries is grown or made by Share students studying horticulture in the Share Garden in Tooting.

Share Nurseries is situated in the Share Garden, based within the grounds of Springfield University Hospital in Tooting, Wandsworth, and will be officially opened by Marsha de Cordova MP, the Shadow Minister for Disabled People, and Cllr Jane Cooper, Deputy Mayor of Wandsworth, on 2nd June 2018, at Share’s Plant Sale and Healthy Living Community Day.

And we’d like to invite you to join us on 2nd June from 10am to 4pm in the Share Garden to help us celebrate the launch of Share Nurseries. As well as lots of bedding, vegetable and herb plants for sale, we’ve got a great day planned for everyone with free exercise workshops and cycling, and healthy living information stalls to get you thinking about eating well and exercising more. Plus our pop-up café will be serving refreshments and street food.

And don’t forget, if you can’t make it to the launch, Share Nurseries is open for sales from Monday to Friday (except public holidays), 9am to 3pm.

We look forward to seeing you there!
