Richard's Kitchen: An ever-evolving dining experience in Tooting

Richard’s Kitchen opened in Tooting Bec in late-December last year. We went to meet the owner, Richard Underhill, to discover the inspiration behind his venture and to find out more about his ever-changing menu!

“I’ve lived in Tooting Bec for 21 years and love the place. There are some fantastic restaurants down the high street but I saw a gap in the market to bring something different to the area. I love eating full stop, especially Mediterranean, Greek, Italian and Lebanese food. But most of all, I love the family-oriented ‘let’s all sit down to eat’ culture of the Mediterranean and this is what I want to replicate locally. We don’t do takeaways here! 

“This is my first venture as an owner. I’ve been a chef for over 30 years and trained under fantastic French chefs in hotels, restaurants, brasseries and city dining rooms and more recently worked in various Antic Group venues across South East London for the last 5 years. However, it was always my dream to have my own place and the reason I became a chef. I wanted to be my own boss and produce a place where people can meet, eat and enjoy themselves. What better area to do this than in Tooting Bec?!

Richard’s Kitchen is a modern British restaurant with a Mediterranean twist. We serve British classics, but with global influences. We value taste over presentation, and simplicity over complexity, allowing the fresh taste of good quality ingredients to shine through.

“We have meat, fish, vegetarian and vegan options on every menu. I order a certain proportion of produce and once it’s gone, I replace it with something else. Therefore, both the lunchtime and dinner menu are constantly evolving and within one week the whole menu will have changed. The brunch menu, however, is more consistent. With our Sunday roasts, we always serve beef and chicken whilst a third meat option as well as vegetarian and vegan dishes will change every week. We also always have the ingredients in the fridge to make meals suitable for children of all ages, depending on what they want to eat.

“I have trusted suppliers who I speak with regularly and who advise me on what’s seasonal, fresh and good value. My meat comes from a fantastic butchers in Wales, my fish from a supplier at the South Bank and vegetables from New Covent Garden. My meat and fish are very good quality and my fish supplier introduces me to fish I’ve never even heard of – last month he told me about Skrei Cod (known as the ‘Norwegian Miracle’!) that’s fished in Norwegian waters for just 6 weeks of the year – it was the best cod I’ve ever tasted! As far as possible, I use seasonal produce which is fresh and in peak condition.

“As another way of regularly keeping things fresh, we’re also starting to host themed evenings once or twice a month (such as Burns Night and Greek evenings). We’ve got an Alsace Evening coming up featuring food and drink which will be prepared by a friend of mine who is a chef from that region and also a tasting evening (featuring 8 courses and paired wines) in the pipeline.

“I have a wonderful team of staff from all over the world which really emphasises what London is all about – that diversity of experiences, culture and people – and Tooting is a fine example of this. I want to establish Richard’s Kitchen as a real part of the community here and as a friendly place that families can come and eat good food together, just like in Italy!”


Richard’s Kitchen is located at 16a Tooting Bec Road, SW17 8BD and open at the following times (excluding bank holidays):

Monday: 5pm-10pm

Tuesday – Friday: 9am-10pm (9am-12pm brunch, 12pm-3pm lunch, 5pm-10pm dinner)

Saturday: 9am-10pm (9am-3pm brunch, 5pm-10pm dinner) 

Sunday: 9pm-8am (9am-12.30pm brunch, 12.30pm onwards Sunday Roasts)

You can either walk-in or book a table by calling 0208 767 0238. NHS and emergency services staff are entitled to 10% off their bill.
