OIS Removals

Tooting removals company OIS Removals know how much is involved when you move house. That’s why they’ve put together this handy checklist of what needs to be done beforehand to ensure a smooth moving experience and minimum stress.

Six Weeks Before Your Move

If you are renting, inform your landlord that you are moving and arrange a final inspection

  • Start sorting and throwing away anything that won’t be moving with you.
  • Go furniture shopping! If you’re buying large items they can take weeks to deliver.
  • If you need to store some items, start getting some quotes – we can provide one for you!

Four Weeks Before Your Move

  • Organise postal redirection with the Royal Mail.
  • Inform subscription services (internet, TV, etc) of your move date and new address.
  • Update your utility suppliers (gas, electricity, etc) on your move details.
  • Contact your local council to update them and see if you are due a council tax rebate.
  • Obtain a quote from a local removal company. Contact us if you would like us to quote.
  • No time to pack yourself? Now’s the time to find a packing service. We can quote for that too!

Three Weeks Before Your Move

  • Eat! You’ll need to use up a lot of the items in your freezer to avoid perishables going bad.
  • Contact any insurance companies to inform them of your move.
  • Got pets? Consider asking a friend to look after them on move day.
  • Consider where your furniture will sit in your new home. Planning now will save time later.
  • If you have kids, organise childcare for your move day.

Two Weeks Before Your Move

  • Get some packing materials. We can provide these if you live in London.
  • Send your new address to loved ones, friends and family. Inform them of your moving date.
  • Contact your doctor / health professional. Order any repeat prescriptions you might need.
  • Start packing items that you won’t need until you move.
  • If you need extra hands to move on the day, now’s the time to ask friends for help.
  • Get rid of any dangerous or flammable materials – the council may collect for you.

One Week Before Your Move

  • Contact your removal company to confirm final times / details for your moving day.
  • Arrange a time to collect keys to your new home with landlord / estate agent.
  • Arrange a time to meet your landlord / agent to drop off keys to your current home.
  • Contact the council to suspend parking rules so your removal company can park outside.
  • If you don’t have parking, ask your neighbours to move their vehicles on the day.
  • Consider giving away any plants that you won’t take with you – they can be tricky to move.
  • Organise boxes into groups so they can go to the right rooms in your new home.

One Day Before Your Move

  • Disconnect your cooker, washing machine, etc (if they’ll be moving with you).
  • Defrost your freezer.
  • Take down fixtures like mirrors, lampshades, pictures, etc.
  • Put out your rubbish and recycling bins so the council can collect them like normal.
  • Ensure all valuables, cash, jewellery, etc, are at hand / secure for your move day.
  • Place all important documents, passports, birth certificates, etc, in a safe, clearly labelled box.
  • Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged.
  • Pack any essentials (toothbrushes, medication, phone charger) into a travel bag.

On the Day of Your Move

  • Have a decent breakfast to ensure you’re fully fuelled for the day ahead.
  • Take your final meter readings. Your suppliers might want these.
  • Label keys if you will be handing them to the new owner / tenant.
  • Ensure plants are protected from damage and drained of excess water.
  • If you have fragile items, put them aside to move them in a car / cab / removal van.
  • Check that all windows and doors are secure before you leave.
  • Confirm your new address with your removal team to ensure there are no mistakes.
  • Before you leave, do one final check of your home – it’s surprising what people forget!
