Share Community – October update

Share Community – October update

Kavita Bowry, Communications and Development Manager at Share Community with on World Mental Health Day, their annual pub quiz, and what’s coming up for Christmas!

As the nights close in and we take the customary canter towards Christmas, here’s a round-up of what’s happening at Share.

Firstly, a massive thank you to everyone who came along to and supported Share’s Fundraising Pub Quiz at the Castle Pub in Tooting in September. What a fun evening, which helped to raise awareness of our work in the community as well as valuable funds.

This month we celebrated World Mental Health Day. Mental health affects us all. At Share, we work with many people with mental health needs, many of whom have learning disabilities and autism as well. And much of our work is to support our students to understand all of these interacting and sometimes conflicting needs to help them cope with the stresses and strains of daily life that bit better, and improve their general wellbeing. So here's to #WorldMentalHealthDay, raising awareness of a difficult issue, often cast aside in the hubbub of modern life.

November showcases the highlight event of Share’s academic year – our Annual Awards and Lunch – which takes place at the Wandsworth Civic Suite on Tuesday 6th November, from 11am to 3pm. This year is extra special as we celebrate our accreditation as a Centre for Excellence in Autism, awarded by the National Autistic Society, which makes us only the second organisation in Wandsworth to have achieved this award. We are delighted to have the Mayor of Wandsworth, Cllr Piers McCausland, and our MP for Battersea and the Shadow Minister for Disabled People, Marsha de Cordova, attending and supporting the event. Everyone in our community is welcome to attend and join in the celebrations, and find out more about our work, but we ask that you register for the event via our website so we can cater appropriately for all our guests.

And, of course, Christmas is just around the corner so the gardening team at Share Nurseries, a social enterprise of Share Community, is busy preparing autumn and winter planters and is now taking orders for Christmas wreaths. This work helps to provide valuable work experience and employability skills for all our students. To order your handmade Christmas wreath, contact Sarah Bailes, Share’s Horticulture Training Manager, via email or telephone 020 3513 6460 or 020 7924 2949.

As always, Share is about community – so do get in touch if you’d like to get involved – we are growing in so many ways, with lots of opportunities for everyone to make their difference in this community and support our work with disabled adults. To stay up to date with what’s happening at Share, sign up for our regular newsletter, which provides news about our events and stories about our work.
