Tooting & Mitcham United – October 2018 Review

Tooting & Mitcham United – October 2018 Review

The lads have bagged some wins! Roger Butcher with the latest from Tooting & Mitcham United FC.

Well at last there seems to have been an upturn in Tooting’s fortunes. We have finally managed to string a few victories together – which has seen us shoot up the table.  But it hasn’t all been plain sailing.

A much improved performance saw the team put three successive defeats behind them by defeating Hertford Town 3-1 in our only home game in October. Lex Beeden and Razzaq Coleman gave us a 2 goal lead, before Hertford pulled one back. But there was no time for the collywobbles to set in as Danny Bassett scored our 3rd just 2 minutes later to seal the win. It was the first goal of a successful month for Bassett.

Danny Bassett bagged 8 goals in October.

We were knocked out of the League Cup away to Premier Division Burgess Hill, although it must be said that the manager took this opportunity to rest some of the more experienced players and give some game time to some of the youngsters.  We followed this up with a tough away game at Cheshunt which brought back some horrible recollections of last season when red cards cost us dearly in a lot of games. This time it was Daryl Coleman who was sent off in the first half. And although we battled gamely, three late goals for the home side meant we left with nothing.

We travelled to Egham with hopes of some success as they have been struggling this season. But they looked much the sharper and took a two goal lead early on. Although Danny Bassett reduced arrears by knocking in the rebound of a twice taken penalty, Egham scored again and led 3-1 at half time. There was a lot of disgruntled supporters who were fearing the worst, but manager Ashley Bosah must have waved the magic hair dryer at half time because we were a different side in the 2nd half. Substitute Hady Ghandour reduced arrears with about 25 minutes to go before Isaiah Jones brought us level a few minutes later. Danny Bassett lobbed the keeper to give us the lead, which we managed to hold on to for the remaining 10 minutes for a well deserved victory which looked unlikely just 45 minutes earlier.

Isaiah Jones played his part in October with 3 goals.

We followed this up with a 4-1 hammering of FC Romania with Danny Bassett grabbing a hat trick and another for Isaiah Jones which was possibly our best performance of the season so far.  Although FC Romania were sitting near the bottom of the table, our next game was away to Hanwell Town who were enjoying a good run of form. We once again put up an excellent performance winning 2-1 with goals from Dominic Morgan-Griffiths and another for Danny Bassett.

Following these 3 wins, we faced a much stiffer task as we travelled to Waltham Abbey who were sitting on top of the division. Tooting took the game to the hosts and were rewarded when Isaiah Jones opened the scoring early in the 2nd half. Danny Bassett wrapped up the scoring to make it 2-0 with his 8th goal in 6 games in October. This was a tremendous victory which moved us up into 6th spot, which is just 1 place outside the play off zone. It feels good to be looking at the top of the table after last season and the beginning of this one.

It is the first time we have achieved 4 successive victories since our championship winning season 2 years ago. So, with the team running into a little bit of good form, we can look at the upcoming fixtures with a bit more confidence than of late.

Why not come down and add your support for the team as we try to carry on the good run!
