2018 Wrapped at Share

2018 Wrapped at Share

Kavita Bowry, Communications and Development Manager at Share Community  (who have a garden and nurseries based in Tooting) wishes everyone a fantastic 2019 and has an exciting opportunity for the New Year...

It is almost time to say farewell to 2018 and hello to 2019. So once all those presents have been wrapped, given, opened and (hopefully) put to good use, thoughts will inevitably turn to New Year’s resolutions to (probably) reverse the excesses of the previous year!

But this year, I’d like to challenge you to take on a resolution that you’ll be only too delighted to keep, and will perhaps change your life forever.

Volunteering. So many of our volunteers have been touched by Share’s mission, vision and values that they have gone on to join the staff team, or been moved to donate, simply based on their experience of volunteering with us for just one day.

Between April 2017 and March 2018, we had the pleasure of hosting 137 volunteers who contributed a whopping 3,850 hours of their time. Share, like so many other small charities, simply couldn’t do what we do and achieve without the generosity of our volunteers.

Share works with disabled people who need extra help and support in order to achieve their potential and realise their dreams and aspirations. However, I would argue that, at some point in our lives, disabled or not, we all need a little ‘extra help and support to achieve our potential and realise our dreams and aspirations’.

Share your time, experience or passion with our students, and you will come to understand how a smile will lift your otherwise quite ordinary day and make you feel like a million dollars. This is, by no means, an exaggeration.

Cally Christmas Card

One of our current volunteers is supporting Cally who has drawn this wonderful Christmas card for us as part of her digital skills course at Share. Cally is a talented artist who uses her personal experiences, imagination and moods to create digital art, usually using Microsoft Paint.

She’s quiet and polite, but can become overwhelmed easily. We’ve been working with her to learn about what she likes and dislikes, and support her to understand her own triggers and develop tools to help her to self-regulate, and reduce any anxiety and stress she may be feeling. So that she can concentrate on doing more of what she loves – drawing beautiful images.

Share’s work with Cally is just one example of how we support people with learning disabilities, autism and mental health needs to live happy, healthy and independent lives, by focusing on what people can do, not what holds them back.

From Cally and Share, Season’s Greetings to you all. Here’s to 2019!
