Tooting & Mitcham United November 2018 Review

Tooting & Mitcham United November 2018 Review

6 games played by the lads at Tooting & Mitcham United FC in November, and things aren’t looking too bad as they head into 2019. Here’s Roger Butcher with the latest...

We have played 6 games in November, and although we have only won once, perversely, it still seems like quite a good month. We started off with a fine 2-0 win over league leaders Waltham Abbey, which completed a tremendous run of 4 consecutive victories – all away from home. Isaiah Jones and Danny Bassett were our scorers.

We faced Ware at home next, full of confidence, but fell behind to a 1st minute goal. Things got worse after 15 minutes when skipper Sol Patterson-Bohner received a red card. Despite playing with the numerical disadvantage, Tooting often had the upper hand and it was a fair reward when Peter Wedgeworth scored directly from a free kick in the last minute of the game.

Next up was Premier Division Harrow Borough in the London Senior Cup. We were slightly understrength due to injuries, suspensions and cup-tied players, and went in at half time 3-0 down. We ended up losing 5-2 which possibly flattered our visitors somewhat. The game saw Stefan Ilic score his first senior goal for the Terrors.

We saved our poorest performance of the month for the trip to Westfield who play near Woking. We scored early on through Jones, but we rarely threatened after that and Westfield fought back for a deserved 2-1 win.

We were at home to Corinthian Casuals in the Surrey Senior Cup next, which was our last chance for cup success this season.  Once again, we were slightly understrength against Premier Division opposition, but this time we started far more positively, and took the lead thanks to Isaiah Jones. Corinthian Casuals equalised in the 2nd half and when they took the lead in the 89th minute, it seemed that it was all over. But Danny Bassett equalised with the last kick of the game, thereby forcing a penalty shoot out. It was Tooting who held their nerve to get through to the next round by 4 penalties to 3. We will be away to either Chipstead or Ashford Town in the next round to be played in January.

Another tough game was up next as the visitors were Bracknell Town, who were in 2nd place with only 2 defeats all season. They showed why they are one of the favourites for promotion by taking a 2-0 lead into the half time break. Tooting had a stroke of good fortune when an Eddie Dines shot took a wicked deflection off of a defender to pull a goal back early in the 2nd half, and the comeback was complete when Hady Ghandour equalised. Both teams could have won it late on, but a draw was possibly a fair result, and a good one for Tooting considering the half time score and the opposition.

So despite just 1 win, we have had 3 pretty good draws and knocked out premier division opposition out of the cup on penalties, so a good month overall which has left us in the top half of the table just a few points off the play-off zone as the cold weather starts to bite!

Just one home game left in 2018, so if you haven’t been to the ground before, why not make this your first time!
