Tooting-based charity feeds homeless in Jamaica at Christmas

Tooting-based charity feeds homeless in Jamaica at Christmas

This month, Iman Ogoo, Senior Project Coordinator at Jimmy Asher Foundation on the organisations’s fantastic work helping the homeless in Jamaica over Christmas.

For the fifth year running, as part of our JAF Global initiative, the Jimmy Asher Foundation has supported UK-based chef Kadian Patterson to feed the homeless and less fortunate in the parishes of Portland and St. Thomas in Jamaica at Christmas.

At a time where most people are celebrating with family and friends, many others are forgotten – especially the homeless and those with special care needs, but we have endeavoured along with our partners in Jamaica to compassionately spread some festive cheer to those in the community who need it most.

We arranged a big Christmas treat for the residents of the Portland Infirmary on 23rd December, and the St Thomas Infirmary the following day on the 24th. The infirmaries aim to care for and improve the lives of people from vulnerable groups such as the homeless and underprivileged, as well as elderly and disabled persons who have been abandoned.

Our team worked very hard to prepare, cook and serve a large amount of food for the two events. On the menu were classic Jamaican dishes of soup, rice & peas with a choice of barbecued chicken, baked chicken or fish, with a side of salad and coleslaw. Christmas fruit cake was the chosen dessert, topped off with a drink of sorrel, a traditional festive favourite made from Hibiscus flowers and spices.

Jamaican native Kadian worked with a team led by Chief Coordinator Latesha Martin who organised and facilitated the smooth running of both days. Latesha and the team also drove around the surrounding areas of both institutions, handing out food packages to homeless and hungry people on the streets, feeding 110 people in Port Antonio, Portland and 125 people in the St. Thomas area. The packages were well received and enjoyed thoroughly. We look forward to continued involvement with this annual project and would like to thank all those who donated money towards the cause.
