Tooting & Mitcham United – 2018/19 Season Review

The championship title has unfortunately eluded Tooting & Mitcham United FC this season, but the Surrey Senior Cup is still up for grabs AND the under-23s have had a great season. Here’s Roger Butcher with his season round-up...

So the season has almost ended – we have one league game remaining. And over the Easter period, our slim playoff hopes were finally extinguished. But April also saw the team progress to the final of the Surrey Senior Cup.

So like most of the season, there have been quite a few highlights, but interspersed with too many sub standard results. If I was to summarise, it would be that we just haven’t been consistent enough over the season with too many poor halves.

And yet, we have only had three defeats in 28 games stretching back to mid November. However, a number of draws against sides near the bottom of the table really prevented us from making a real challenge for promotion.

April started off well with a 1-0 win at Banstead in the semi-final of the Surrey Senior Cup, with a Danny Bassett penalty being the only goal of the game. It meant that we reached our first final since 2007 when we beat Metropolitan Police 4-1 after extra time. This year’s final opponents will again be Metropolitan Police, and the game will be played at Dorking Wanderers FC on Tuesday May 7th – any support would be very much appreciated.

We continued our league programme with a comfortable 2-0 win over Molesey with goals from Danny Bassett and Tope Fadahunsi. We followed that up with a decent 2-1 win away to Ashford Town, with Danny Bassett again on target for the 6th successive match and his 20th of the season. Despite our winning run, our main challenger for the one remaining play off spot, Westfield, also kept winning, which meant that entering the Easter period, we needed maximum points, with Westfield slipping up. In the event, neither happened!

We had a disappointing draw at home to Chalfont St Peter and followed this up with an even more disappointing draw at 20th placed South Park. When we look back over the season, we will see that we had more draws than nearly everyone else in our division, and in many of these we played well enough to pick up the wins, but were often unable to turn pressure and possession into goals.

So we go into the last game of the season guaranteed a 6th or 7th placed finish. On the one hand it is disappointing, as we probably feel that we have played well enough over the 2nd half of the season to have done a bit better. But at the same time, you have to remember that we were relegated last season with a really poor record and started this season with a new manager in his first season at this level. And we didn’t get off to a great start, and at one point earlier in the season we were languishing in 18th place. So whether it’s a glass half full or a glass half empty will depend on your view!

Outside of the first team, there have been a number of personal successes for some of our younger players. Abraham Odoh has spent most of the season on loan to Charlton Athletic, whilst Isaiah Jones and Samuel Folarin have had successful trials at Middlesbrough.

And Tooting’s Under-23 team have also had a successful season winning the Bostik Development South Division. They will have a “Champion of Champions” grand final playoff with the winners of the North Division, Bowers & Pitsea. This will take place at Aveley FC on Wednesday 8th May.
