New South London Charity Seeks Fundraisers

Georgia's Gift
L–R: co-founders Angela Hegarty and Suzanne Radford

Georgia’s Gift is a new charity set up to support bereaved families following baby loss before, at or shortly after birth in the South London area. The charity aims to help with some of the costs around baby loss with the offer of small grants and work to break the taboo around the death of a baby.

Co-founders Suzanne Radford and Angela Hegarty have been fundraising for the neonatal charity First Touch at St George’s in Tooting for many years but felt there was more they could do around bereavement. Suzanne’s daughter Georgia, after whom the charity is named, spent her brief life on the neo natal unit at St George’s in 2000 and was aware there were still many silent issues around baby loss.

Suzanne said, “There have been some positive changes around baby loss in the last 18 years but it is still very much a taboo subject that people are uncomfortable with talking about, that’s why we felt it was important to start the conversation. So many families are affected that have never spoken about it. It’s also incredibly expensive to arrange a funeral to say a proper goodbye to your baby, many families struggle with this and cannot afford to do what they would like to honour their precious baby.”

Georgia’s Gift will take referrals from professionals and offer small grants to help with some of the costs related to a baby’s death. This could be a contribution towards funeral costs, transport costs for a supportive friend or relative to come and be with them or perhaps a memorial plaque for a baby who may be in an unmarked grave.

The charity is very keen to get people fundraising for them, so they can help more families at an incredibly difficult time.
