This year's Community Fun Day in Tooting a huge success!

This year's Community Fun Day in Tooting a huge success!

A message from Kate Allan, Secretary of the Balham and Tooting Community Association (BATCA), on Saturday’s fantastic Community Fun Day!

Perfect weather, a great crowd and loads to do made this a very special day.

Everyone was there – young people, families, community groups, campaigners, charities, business and our political leaders. People from all faiths and cultures flocked in hundreds.

Jazzy balloons signalled the event from the High Street. Then on to Tooting Healthy Streets’ pilot ‘play street’, where kids revelled in street games – a vision for more play streets in future.

There were fun activities galore. Top draws were the goats and sheep from Kingston City Farm, bungee jumping and the giant slide, dazzling penalty shootouts from Balham Football Club, non-stop table tennis from Ernest Bevin College, Sillie Millie The Clown and face painting, henna painting and other crafts. ‘Make your own smoothie’ bikes were a star attraction.

Summerstown 182 made a glorious splash of yellow as people made fabric daffodils to celebrate local historical figure Peter Barr – the Tooting ‘Daffodil King’ who created many of the daffodil strains we know and love today.

Somali, Caribbean, Arab and Indo Pak food were as always a great draw. Homemade cakes were eagerly consumed at the refreshment stalls run by the Al Risalah Trust schools and local churches.

Movers and shakers from Tooting’s buzzing community groups brought their campaigns and messages to a wider public – on homelessness, climate change, autism, supporting families and more. NHS teams raised awareness on living healthily and coping with health problems.

Dr Rosena Allin-Khan, MP for TootingJane Cooper, Mayor of Wandsworth, and the Bishop of Southwark spoke praising the Fun Day’s community spirit. They launched the family cycle ride organised by the Wandsworth Cycling Campaign and Healthy Streets to promote safe cycling for all.

Dr Rosena Allin-Khan MP said, “I’m always happy to be here in the heart of the community at the Community Fun Day. It typifies this incredibly special community, where everyone comes together regardless of their race or political group.”

James Grant of Tooting Healthy Streets said, “Our pop-up play street showed how removing traffic and allowing children to play brings a street to life and brings the community together. It's a simple way for us to lead more active, social and fun lives. The grown-ups reminisced about their own childhoods playing out. Kids asked when they could do it again. We'll be looking for support for many more play streets in Tooting in the near future.”

A generous sum has been raised for St George’s Hospital, amount to be announced later.

The three co-organisers, the Al Risalah Trust schools, St Augustine’s church and the BATCA team, thank all who contributed in so many ways.

In particular, thank you to our main sponsors, Spice Village, the Salvation Army, Balham FC, Ernest Bevin College and Managing Care Ltd.

Also to Tooting Daily PRSSMinar Jewellers, Barkers Chemist, Tooting Rotary Club and the West Indian Friends and Families Association and the many others who have donated generously.
