Tooting & Mitcham United FC Season Preview 2019/20

The new football season is just around the corner and Tooting & Mitcham FC are raring to go! Here’s Roger with his season preview...

Here we are again – the Women’s World Cup, the Cricket World Cup and Wimbledon are out of the way, so the football season must be on the horizon! In fact we have already started our pre season friendly programme and the results have been encouraging.

Of course, we all know that pre-season results are unimportant – especially if you lose a few games, but winning a few games still fill the supporters with a bit of confidence.

The manager, Ashley Bosah, has done quite well at retaining a lot of last season’s players despite a bit of an exodus. We already knew that we would lose 3 of our young stars to professional clubs – Isaiah Jones and Sam Folarin to Middlesbrough and Abraham Odoh to Charlton Athletic.  There were a couple of further departures following the appointment of former Tooting boss Frank Wilson to the manager’s post at MersthamAntonio Simeone, Peter Wedgeworth and Eddie Dines have all decided to join their ex-manager at Merstham.  Merstham play in the division above us, so its understandable that players will want to test themselves at the highest level so they all leave with our best wishes. We also saw the departure of last season’s top scorer, Danny Bassett, but in a twist, he has already returned and has featured in all of our pre-season games!

Nevertheless, I think the fans will be pleased that we seem to have retained the central core of our team and hopefully the manager will be able to recruit new players to complement those. He has already brought in a few new faces and they have all appeared in the pre-season matches – but we know that there is a lot of player movement in pre-season and somebody can feature prominently in the friendly matches but disappear to another club once the serious stuff begins. And vice versa as well.

This season we will be in the same division as last year, although there is a new sponsor and a new name. So we will be in the Bet Victor South Central Division. Apart from the promoted and relegated teams, we will still be facing most of the teams from last season. And having finished 6th last year, just 1 place outside of the playoffs, this time around the supporters will be expecting to go one better (at least). If last year was a learning curve in Ashley Bosah’s first season as a manager, he will hopefully have learned enough to take us on to the next level.

Although I think most fans would have been happy with a mid-table finish last year, this time around I think anything less than a playoff finish would be disappointing. So who else might be challenging for promotion? Obviously the top teams from last season, such as Bracknell, will be in contention, but I think Westfield will be a major force this season. They had a great first season in this league last year, and have kept most of their squad and have made a couple of additions. And last season’s FA Vase winners, Chertsey, will probably be there or thereabouts if they can keep the momentum going.

So far we have beaten Molesey 2-0, Tooting Bec 2-0 and Carshalton Athletic 3-0. We followed that up with an impressive 3-2 victory over Reading. Nobody can complain about the style and quality of the football we’ve seen so far.

Why not come along to watch one of the remaining pre season games? Apart from the Charlton game, they will be played on the 3G pitch at the rear of the main stadium with admission just £3.

The league programme starts on 17th August with an away trip to Hertford Town with our first home game the following Tuesday against Ashford Town. Then we begin our FA Cup journey at home to Faversham Town on 28th August.

Come along – the 280 bus is on diversion at the moment and stops at Morden Road, just a few minutes walk from the stadium!
