Tooting charity continues legacy of local headteacher

Founded in 2012, the Naz Legacy Foundation is a Tooting-based charity which seeks to promote excellence in education and positive integration of young people into British society.

The Foundation was established to continue the legacy of the late Naz Bokhari OBE, the first British Muslim head of a secondary school in the UK, Ernest Bevin Secondary School for Boys (now Ernest Bevin College).

Naz was known as ‘Mr Tooting’ by locals, a best friend to many but most importantly an amazing father and husband. The Foundation has been set up by his family who wish to honour his life and good work. The Foundation runs three programmes to raise the aspirations of young people and promote positive integration into society:

  • The Naz Bokhari Programme offers young people mentoring, skill building workshops and work placements;
  • The Diversity Programme encourages young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to visit a cultural institution for the first time and learn about the rich heritage of diverse role models in Britain;
  • The Foundation’s Interfaith Iftar offers young people the opportunity to meet people from different faiths and none and mingle with leaders in our society such as the Chief Rabbi, Bishop of London and Mayor of London.

The Foundation will be launching the Naz Bokhari Programme in 2020, which is aimed at students aged 16-18 and open to young people who are residents of Wandsworth. The Foundation is seeking to engage with local community groups, faith leaders and businesses to ensure young people are given the best possible experience on the programme.
