Christmas at First Touch in Tooting

Christmas at First Touch in Tooting

Sarah Collins of First Touch NNU in Tooting on how they help families and celebrate the festive season.

We love December at First Touch! The decorations and Christmas trees are up at the neonatal unit, and every year we host a Christmas party for neonatal 'graduates' at St George's Hospital. It's a lovely way for families who have been through the tough neonatal journey to stay in touch with other families, and for neonatal staff to see the vulnerable, fragile babies they nursed grow bigger and stronger. This year we had 2 incredible entertainers from Dantastic Productions, a visit from Santa and mountains of festive food and drink for everyone.

Mum and party goer Louise Hunter told us, “My second son Hugh spent 10 months at the neonatal unit, having been born at just 24 weeks. Now 7, he loved the parachute and fake snow at the party!”

It is tough for families having a poorly baby in hospital over Christmas. We are buying 40 copies of 'Twas The Night Before Christmas' so every baby can be read to on Christmas Eve, and we are funding stockings filled with presents for all babies at the neonatal unit on Christmas Day. We are also giving presents to sisters and brothers of the babies.

Families and our wonderful nurses aren't forgotten, as we are providing chocolate oranges for everyone and festive food treats on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

We are able to do this thanks to a number of generous donors, and to suppliers allowing us to have some baby products at cost. Special thanks to the Facebook group Handmade With Love - Blankets for Preemies who have crocheted beautiful woollen snowmen for all babies and knitted wonderful Christmas Pudding covers for all the chocolate oranges for nurses and families.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us in 2019, enabling us to buy specialist medical equipment and to make life for the babies, families and staff at St George's just a little bit brighter and kinder. We are grateful to each and every one of you, and wish you all a peaceful and happy festive season.
