Tooting & Mitcham United FC November 2019 Review

A rocky November for Tooting & Mitcham United FC but they remain optimistic going into the festive season, with a fantastic free Christmas event coming up! Here’s Roger with his latest review...

This month a little taste of reality came to Tooting as our great start to the season came to a bit of a shuddering halt. But, with so many games still to come, there is still an air of optimism around the club.

We started with a hard fought win over a rejuvenated Barking. We took the lead early on through David Castanho, but the visitors equalised shortly before the break. Danny Bassett continued his fine goalscoring form with the winner after 54 minutes, although we had to defend stoutly to claim the 3 points.

We slipped up in our next game at home to Chertsey when we were defeated 3-1. It was a league cup game, and as seems to be the norm for these minor cup games, the manager took the opportunity to play some back up players and a few youth players. Although we played well in spells, the visitors deserved their 3-1 win.

We faced a huge challenge in our next game – away to Margate in the FA Trophy. Margate are a division above us, but we took the game by the scruff of the neck from the off and took the lead before half time with another goal from Danny Bassett – his 13th of the season. Expecting a response from the home side, we redoubled our efforts and David Castanho added 2 goals in quick time as we took control of the game.  There was still time for Razzaq Coleman to grab a 4th goal two minutes from time to complete a stunning win – arguably more impressive than the win over Dorking Wanderers earlier in the season.

Next up came the clash between the last 2 unbeaten teams in the league as Tooting hosted Hanwell Town. In front of our biggest league attendance of the season, we fell behind to a 4th minute penalty. And despite a tremendous effort we were unable to break down the resolute Hanwell defence and slipped to our 1st league defeat as we failed to score in the league for the 1st time this season.

Despite this setback, we went into the next game at home to Staines with full confidence. However, that confidence was misplaced as we put in a strangely subdued performance and lost by 2 goals to 1. David Castanho was our scorer.

Up next was a local derby away to Carshalton in the FA Trophy. Carshalton are a division above us this season and are very much in the hunt for promotion, so this was a very tough assignment of our team. We took an early lead with a fantastic solo goal from Hady Ghandour in the 5th minute. We then defended with great tenacity for the rest of the half and despite a couple of scares, we went into the break with the lead.

In the 2nd half, Carshalton maintained the pressure and scored 2 goals in quick succession to knock the stuffing out of us. A couple of substitutions saw us up our game a bit and push for a late equaliser. But their keeper was in good form and we exited the Trophy – beaten but not disgraced.

We faced Whyteleafe next in the final round of the group stage of the League Cup knowing that we would have to win by 4 clear goals to progress to the knockout rounds. But once again, we played a mixture of 1st team and reserves, and slumped to a 2-1 defeat with Junior Timite scoring for us.

So that was a 4th straight defeat in a period that has seen us slip to 6th place in the league. We had the chance to rectify the situation at home to Marlow on Saturday, but we were unable to break them down and the game ended in a scoreless draw. However, such are the vagaries of the fixture list, that we are 8 points behind the league leaders having played 3 games fewer. Therefore, if we were to win our 3 games in hand we’d be top! So even though there has been a slump in results, the overall picture is still bright and there is plenty of time to turn things around.

Meanwhile, the club has announced that the home game against Ware on Saturday 14th December has been designated as a “Festive Funday” and as such will have free admission for all.  There will be various seasonal activities such as face painting, and we will also be receiving a visit from Santa! There will also be the opportunity to have a look around the whole facility and find out about the club’s plans for the future. Just print off the leaflet and present it at the turnstyles for free admission to the game. The whole event starts at midday, with the game kicking off at 3pm as usual. It goes without saying that if you haven’t visited the club before, this is a great chance to get to look around and then enjoy the football for nothing! So why not make the most of this opportunity to come along.

Come along – the 280 bus is on diversion at the moment and stops at Morden Road, just a few minutes walk from the stadium!

Upcoming Fixtures:

Ware – Sat 14th December – Kick off 3pm

Chipstead – Sat 28th December – Kick off 3pm
