It's not just local businesses that Zipcar helps to keep on the move, but a plethora of local charities and community organisations too – providing them with affordable access to on-demand transport.

One such charity is Wandsworth Foodbank, who provide emergency food, support and advice for up to 100 households a week across the borough. Every Monday, the team collects items that have been donated at 9 different supermarkets across Wandsworth, as well as using donated funds to purchase extra provisions. These are then processed and matched to the needs of the households that have been referred to them throughout the week, ready for delivery on Friday afternoon.

When we visited the distribution centre on a Friday, the deliveries included provisions for a family, including two young children, who had been temporarily housed in a bed & breakfast with no cooking facilities, except for a microwave.

It's vitally important for the team to provide for their referrals as quickly as possible, especially in time for the weekend.

Dan Frith, Manager of Wandsworth Foodbank told us: "During lockdown, we provided emergency food supplies to more than 1,200 local households referred to us in severe hardship. Seven in ten had never had to use the Foodbank before. As furlough ends, unemployment rises and winter comes, we're sadly expecting more local people than ever to need to use our food bank.

"Just like we have a temporary distribution centre, we have temporary vehicles. We want everything to be temporary because we don't think foodbanks should exist! “We've been using Zipcar since we started for a number of reasons. There's no annual fee for charities and they've also arranged it for us so that we can pre-book the same van every Monday for our supermarket pick-ups and also for our drop-offs on a Friday – this is vital so that our work flow is uninterrupted.

“We also have a number of our volunteer team driving for us – we have 12 drivers on the one Zipcar account now and more can be added. It's a great solution for us currently."
